In 1991, the government of Taiwan, in a goodwill move, returned to
Indonesia ten young orangutans that had been held captive in
Taiwan for entertainment purposes and as pets. They came to
be known as THE TAIWAN TEN, and,
for awhile, were taken care of by OFI. But, eventually, for
rehabilitation, they were removed to East Kalimantan, and
elsewhere. However, before they left, I spent about
a month assisting in their care, and photographing them.
They were housed, temporarily, in cages, in the
garage of a house near the Ragunan Zoo in Jakarta, where
an outdoor "jungle gym" was built to exercise them.
