Starting in 1972, I went to East Kalimantan almost every year for the next fifteen years, wandering around its Kutai regency, visiting the Dayak people of that area, accompanied by a guide/translator and a cook, and carrying a movie camera, a still camera, and an audio tape recorder. After 1975, it was my custom to stay in the one of the two longhouses of a Dayak "village" I had discovered. Using that place as my base camp, I would go to wherever I was informed there was a happening for me to record.
