I went to Sulawesi in 1987, to a region called Tanah Toraja. Again, I was alone, except for a guide and a driver. We used a minibus to move from place to place, but, as usual, we also did a lot of walking, taking in the sights, and the ceremo-nies - death ceremonies. One such ceremony was for an eighty-year-old woman with five living children and many grandchildren, each of whom was obligated to contribute seven, or more, buffaloes to be sacrficed during the ceremony. For this event, about fifty buffaloes, out of a hundred, were killed.
