Orangutans of The Camp Leakey Study Area
Adult males - the "kings": Tom, Kusasi, Yayat,
Pola, Adik, Ralph
When I first arrived at Camp Leakey, three ex-captive sub-adult
males were present: Pola, Yayat, and Kusasi. Over time, starting with
Pola, each, in turn, grew cheekpads and became the dominant adult male.
Before them, several wild cheekpadders visited the Camp for food and
females.
TOM, now the apparent king of Camp Leakey, following a fight in which he defeated KUSASI, is the eldest son of TUTUT,
so is the first of the "native born" of Camp Leakey to take over as the dominant male. Like YAYAT before him, KUSASI still comes to the Camp, but avoids contact with TOM.

KUSASI, for many years, was the dominant male orangutan
of Camp Leakey, but he lost a fight with TOM, and was replaced by him.

YAYAT, when he became a cheekpadder, exercised dominance over
Kusasi, who kept his distance. But, when Kusasi grew his cheekpads,
becoming an adult, he turned the tables. Although Yayat still visits
the Camp, he keeps away from Kusasi.

POLA, after reaching adulthood, did not "reign"
long, and, unvanquished, went off into the forest.
